About TUWES

Trade Union of Workers in Education and Science of Slovakia (OZPSaV / TUWES) is the largest teachers’ trade union in the Slovak Republic, covering all levels of education; including pre-school, primary, secondary, vocational and higher education.

It seeks to protect and defend the interests of its members while providing legal aid, protection and social help, address workers’ pay and conditions issues and deal with health and safety matters.

As a member of EI (Education International) and ETUCE (European Trade Union Committee for Education), OZPSaV has participated in a number of international projects.

Having signed a mutual agreement of co-operation, OZPSaV has worked very closely with its partners in the V4 countries. Recently, the International Visegrad Fund supported a conference organized by OZPSaV named „Education - Cure to Crises.”

The union has also received a grant from the EEA Financial Mechanism and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism to build an education, training, and recreation centre in Kežmarské Žľaby, the mountainous region of the High Tatras.

To keep its edge and reach out to the public, the union organizes a televised Best Teacher of the Year annual contest.
